Want to jump straight to the answer? The best point of sales system for most people is definitely Square and Lightspeed.

Modern point-of-sale (POS) solutions are flexible and offer a wide array of fantastic features. Take a payment on your phone. Sync your inventory with the registers. Let workers in the field get a card and signature (with photos) on the company tablet.

Transactions are easy for customers, who can pay in more ways. And everything is far simpler on the backend for your employees and business.

POS systems track transactions automatically. Get a real-time view of your best-selling products and most productive employees without a whole lot of extra work on your end.

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your existing POS software or buy a brand new point-of-sale system for your startup, this guide will help you find the best one for your needs.

The 9 Best POS Systems

While there are tons of different POS systems out there, I recommend starting your search with the following:

  1. Square POS
  2. Lightspeed
  3. Shopify
  4. PayCafe
  5. Quickbooks POS
  6. Helcim
  7. Revel
  8. Vend
  9. TouchBistro

There’s a lot of really great POS systems out there that didn’t make the list, but I wanted to include a range of options.

You have to be thoughtful about going with a vendor who’s pricing scheme and processing fees make sense for your business. You’re always going to pay a little for this service, the question is how much?

It’s a great time to be looking at POS systems. Customers like you are very much in the drivers’ seat.

I’ll show you the best ones, their top features, pricing options, and point out any potential drawbacks as well.

7 Rules for Overhelpful Leaders

7 Rules for Overhelpful Leaders

Don’t hand the ball to a person who habitually drops it. Turbulent days have enough frustrations of their own. Don’t enable people to frustrate you.

Image of a timid kitten looking in a mirror. Examine yourself before you complain about others.

First reflection:

Examine yourself before you complain about others.

  1. How are you helping in unhelpful ways? Negative patterns are leadership’s fault.
  2. Why aren’t you bringing up negative patterns?
  3. How are you doing the same thing, but expecting different results?
  4. What leadership development skills will improve your ability to help others effectively?
  5. What do you expect of yourself when negative patterns persist?

7 rules for overhelpful leaders:

#1. Don’t help too quickly. If your first response is doing something for someone, you are teaching people to depend on you, not themselves.

Leaders who help too quickly are despised by the people they help. No one respects you when you treat them as if they were incompetent.

#2. Don’t help too much. Before offering help, ask, “What do you need from me?” People need to hear their own voices asking for help.

Leaders who help too much enable helplessness.

#3. Don’t help too long. Provide help when people are learning new skills, rising to new responsibilities, or taking on new roles. Never habitually do someone’s job for them.

Competent people need to run.

#4. Always bring up issues with optimism. Don’t bring it up if you don’t believe in their desire and ability to improve. Reassign them instead.

#5. Help people who outgrow the need for help.

#6. Don’t talk about anything you aren’t going to do something about.

#7. Don’t worry about concerns you won’t confront. Accept mediocracy.

When to stop helping:

Stop helping when you encourage dependency.

Stop helping when:

  1. Competent people don’t step up.
  2. Competent people expect help.
  3. You do more and they do less.

How might overhelpful leaders learn to be less helpful?

What are the secrets of effective help?

Weight Loss: The Best Type Of Intermittent Fasting

What form of intermittent fasting is the best: alternate day fasting, the 5:2 diet, or time-restricted eating?

Intermittent fasting, which comes in several types, causes mild to moderate weight loss, reduces blood pressure, blood sugar levels, triglyceride and cholesterol levels.

This pattern of eating can improve microbial gut diversity and help people eat less throughout the day.

But which is the best type of intermittent fasting?

A group of researchers reviewed 25 studies on three forms of intermittent fasting:

  • Time-restricted eating: an eating window of 8 to 12 hours and fasting during the remaining hours each day.
  • 5:2 diet: five days eating normally and two days fasting with restricting the food intake to 500 calories.
  • Alternate day fasting: fasting on every other day with restricting the food intake to 500 calories.

The studies reported that those who follow a time-restricted eating regime noticed 3 percent weight loss.

While alternate day fasting produced 3 to 8 percent weight loss within three to eight weeks.

The weight loss results for the 5:2 diet group are similar to alternate day fasting, the finding is surprising as people on the 5:2 diet fasted much less than those who did alternate-day fasting.

The 5:2 diet and alternate day fasting produces similar weight loss results to regular dieting such as low-calorie diets.

Professor Krista Varady, the study’s first author, said:

“We noted that intermittent fasting is not better than regular dieting; both produce the same amount of weight loss and similar changes in blood pressure, cholesterol and inflammation.”

Moreover, people on any of these two intermittent fasting regimens have been found to maintain 7 percent weight loss over a year.

Professor Varady said:

“You’re fooling your body into eating a little bit less and that’s why people are losing weight.”

The review includes some practical advice for individuals who may consider an intermittent fasting regimen.

Side-effects, such as dizziness, constipation, and headaches will drop within one or two weeks of fasting.

Drinking more water can reduce headaches due to dehydration.

  • Exercise: Moderate to high-intensity activity is possible as some participants reported that exercise gives them more energy during the fasting hours. Though, it is recommended to have the fasting meal after exercise.
  • What to eat: Make sure you eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains as they are high in fibre, which eases constipation.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine: Alcohol and caffeinated energy drinks are high in calories and can cause headaches due to dehydration.
  • Who should avoid fasting: Those with a BMI less than 18.5, those with eating disorders, those who need to take their medicine with a meal at regular times, children under 12, pregnant or lactating women, and shift workers.

Professor Varady said:

“People love intermittent fasting because it’s easy.

People need to find diets that they can stick to long term.

It’s definitely effective for weight loss and it’s gained popularity because there are no special foods or apps necessary.

You can also combine it with other diets, like Keto.”

The study was published in the Annual Review of Nutrition (Varady et al., 2021).

How to Build Your First 3 Marketing Service Offerings

How to Build Your First 3 Marketing Services

Agency owners know the struggle of packaging deliverables.

They know their expertise (like content marketing, paid ads, or SEO), but it is hard to wrap it into perfect packages that your prospects can’t say no to. If you offer too little, they won’t be interested. And if you offer too much, they might not be able to afford your services.

Your agency needs to make a profit, and that means you have to get an ROI on all your lead generating investments. That’s why building your first 3 marketing service offerings feels like a daunting task.

If you mess this up—your business doesn’t grow.

Luckily, tens of thousands of agency owners have walked this path before you and figured out how to market your service offerings strategically. It all comes down to something you see all the time—tiered packages.

Tiered packages look something like this:

  1. Basic
  2. Premium
  3. Top-Tier

These tiered packages give your clients the option to choose between the deliverables that work best for their KPIs, and their budget.

But what do these packages look like for agencies? Let’s look at some examples…

Your Basic Package

Think of this package as your Step One. It’s for clients who are dabbling in your marketing expertise (like email marketing or data and analytics). It’s the package with the least amount of deliverables, time commitment, and investment. It’s your minimum viable product (MVP) that you can sell that still has a profit margin.

A basic package for a content marketing agency might include:

  • 4x articles per month for the client’s blog
  • 5 distribution channels per article
  • $5,000/month

A paid ads agency’s basic package could look like:

  • 8 ad sets per month
  • 3 conversion goals
  • $5,000/month

This is the best package for prospects who don’t have a lot of money to invest in their marketing just yet (but want to get started!). With this package, you can not only show them the ROI of working with your agency. You can also get the wheels turning on their content output or paid ads account.

These clients are the *best* clients to continue to upsell down the line. Once you’ve achieved results for them (a.k.a helped them make their investment back AND then some), let them know how much more successful ($$$) they could be if they upgraded to your Premium Package.

Your Premium Package

Chances are that most prospects will choose your Premium Package, in the same way you generally go with the middle-tiered package for the subscription services you subscribe to. The Basic Package can be too simple, and sometimes you need more experience with the company before you’re willing to go for the full Top-Tier Package (we’ll talk more about that in the next section).

Your Premium Package is a few steps up from your Basic Package, with more deliverables, more time commitment, and higher investment. The caveat is that this extra work and investment comes with a higher…

The Best ERP Software For Your Business – 2022 Review

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software helps large organizations manage their entire operation within a single system.

This is much more desirable and efficient than using various tools from different vendors that don’t integrate well or making employees log in to multiple accounts just to accomplish simple tasks.

With features like CRM, human resources, accounting, supply chain management, and more, a good ERP software centralizes and simplifies the daily work of every employee.

While the majority of ERP software is adopted by larger enterprises, smaller businesses have begun using enterprise resource planning software over the last few years.

And it makes sense. ERP software is an all-in-one solution for any business.

A Fortuitous Encounter Changed a Life

A Fortuitous Encounter Changed a Life

Ted had a penchant for embellishing the stories he told about himself. The number of times his first book was rejected ranged from 20 to 43. The actual number was probably 27.

Ted was on his way home to burn the manuscript of his first book when he ran into an old college buddy on Madison Ave. It was an encounter that changed the trajectory of his life.

Some people might call Ted’s encounter a divine appointment. Others say the universe conspired to help him.

God and the Universe are outside of your control.

Image of a box of chocolates. Anticipate what you give more than what you get.

Certainty:

You will encounter someone who will change the trajectory of your life. It might happen today.

Forest Gump’s mom told him, “Life is a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Optimists live with a hint of anticipation. But you don’t always get chewy chocolates. Sometimes it’s a strawberry cream. Or you might get nuts that make you gasp and turn blue.

Prepare:

Coleman Cox said, “I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work, the more of it I seem to have.”

Ted had labored over a book for six months and was beating the pavement to sell it when his fortuitous encounter occurred.

Hard work prepared Ted for good fortune.

A shift:

You never know when you might be ‘Ted’s friend’. The question isn’t who will lift your trajectory. The question is whose trajectory will you lift.

Anticipating your fortuitous encounter is nice. It’s more excellent to be the person Ted met.

Anticipate what you give more than what you get.

Ted’s friend had just gone to work for Vanguard Press. It was 1937. Ted went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for his contribution to children’s literature. You might know Ted Geisel as Dr. Seuss.

What type of people are able to lift the trajectory of others?

This Popular Belief Prevents Happiness

The belief can be overcome when it is framed in the right way.

Believing that leisure is unproductive and wasteful is linked to higher levels of stress and depression and lower levels of happiness, a study finds.

Many people believe that being productive is the ultimate goal of life and if you’re not serving some greater purpose, then you’re wasting time.

However, people who hold this view are more likely to report poor mental health and enjoy their leisure time the least.

Dr Selin Malkoc, study co-author, said:

“There is plenty of research which suggests that leisure has mental health benefits and that it can make us more productive and less stressed.

But we find that if people start to believe that leisure is wasteful, they may end up being more depressed and more stressed.”

Serving a greater goal

One way for the productive-minded to enjoy leisure more, though, is to see it as part of a greater goal, explained Dr Rebecca Reczek, study co-author:

“If leisure can be framed as having some kind of productive goal, that helps people who think leisure is wasteful get some of the same benefits.”

Dr Malkoc agrees:

“…think about the productive ways that individual leisure activities can serve their long-term goals.

Find ways to make fun activities part of a larger goal in your life.

Think about how it is productive, instrumental and useful.”

The conclusions come from a series of studies, one of which asked people how they celebrated Halloween.

Some activities, such as going to a party, were fun for their own sake while others, like taking children trick-or-treating, served a larger goal.

People subscribing to the popular belief that leisure is wasteful found the party less enjoyable.

However, this was not the case for the trick-or-treating, said Dr Gabriela Tonietto, the study’s first author, said:

“Those who participated in fun activities that fulfilled responsibilities, like trick or treating with your kids, didn’t see such a reduction in how much they enjoyed their Halloween.”

Negative views about leisure are worldwide

It is not just Americans who view leisure time as wasteful — the view is globalised, said Dr Reczek:

“We live in a global society and there are people everywhere that hear the same messages about how important it is to be busy and productive.

And once you believe that, and internalize the message that leisure is a waste, our results suggest you’re going to be more depressed and less happy, no matter where you live.”

Negative views about leisure can be surprisingly damaging, affecting people’s ability to enjoy themselves even in the simplest ways.

In one study, students were invited to do a boring task which had a break in the middle when they watched a funny cat video.

However, people who view leisure as a waste of time couldn’t enjoy the video at all.

Dr Malkoc explained:

“These are students who are coming into the lab to answer surveys, which can be boring.

In the middle of that we give them a funny video to watch, which you would expect would be a nice break – and even then, some participants didn’t enjoy it as much.

They had…
