Albert Einstein’s Advice Before He Died

Albert Einstein’s Advice Before He Died

William Miller, an editor at Life Magazine, interviewed Albert Einstein just months before his death. He took his son Pat with him.

The real reason Miller arrived at Einstein’s home unannounced was to give his son Pat, a freshman at Harvard, some inspiration. During the day, Pat asked for life advice.

The Interview appeared in Life Magazine, May 1955. Einstein died of an aneurism on April 18, 1955.

Einstein’s advice to Pat Miller:

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.

Never lose a holy curiosity.”

Success:

Einstein continued…

“Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value. He is considered successful in our day who gets more out of life than he puts in. But a man of value will give more than he receives.”

What is the difference between being a success and being a person of value?

3 Personality Traits That Are Signs Of A Cheating Partner

Research has identified three ways to predict adultery.

Adultery is predicted by having a neurotic partner with low self-esteem and being suspicious that they are having an affair, research finds.

People who are neurotic tend to have less control over their impulses, so are more likely to act on an opportunity.

Those with low self-esteem may seek validation by having an affair.

Being suspicious of a partner is also predictive of adultery because people are surprisingly good at intuitively reading the signs of infidelity.

In one study, a stranger was able to spot a relationship cheat just by watching a couple interacting for a few minutes.

The conclusions come from a nationally representative survey of 2,291 people who had been married for at least 12 months.

The results showed that there was a 2.3% chance of adultery in each year.

Other studies have suggested that infidelity may affect up to 75% of relationships.

Neuroticism was an important predictor of adultery, the study’s authors write:

“…neuroticism was significantly and positively associated with infidelity, which is similar to what has been reported regarding an association between neuroticism and perceived likelihood of engaging in an affair.”

Neurotic people may be more likely to act on opportunities, the authors write:

“…it may be that impulsivity is the aspect of neuroticism that gives rise to increased likelihood of infidelity, as it has been hypothesized that people with high impulsivity and low dependability may be more likely to act on sexual opportunities.”

On top of neuroticism, low self-esteem and being suspicious, adultery was also predicted by marital dissatisfaction and being less religious.

Men were also more likely to cheat when their partner was pregnant.

Being religious was linked to lower levels of infidelity, the researchers also found.

The study was published in the Journal of Family Psychology (Whisman et al., 2007).

The Complete Guide to Subdomains

Hostnames and domains are integral to the internet’s domain name system (DNS). However, subdomains have become increasingly vital for website owners to serve the growing needs of their audiences.

As a child of the parent domain, subdomains are a separate but useful part created to offer specialized features or functionality.

For instance, while the domain is your primary website, you can offer users a blog under a subdomain, just like blog.duolingo.com. And since a subdomain is an extension of a regular domain, it appears on the left side of the hostname in the URL.

Subdomains can also be used strategically by operations, marketing, and technical support to organize your website’s content into different, user-relevant sections.

For instance, nytimes.com leveraged a subdomain to establish a dedicated cooking section for its readers.

What Is a Subdomain Name?

In simple terms, a subdomain name is the title associated with sub-websites created under a website’s main domain, but let’s back up a bit.

A domain represents a website’s core, where its primary functions are centralized. A domain is equivalent to the hostname or URL we enter into a browser to reach a website, like Google (google.com) or Quick Sprout (quicksprout.com). To acquire a domain, you must register the name with a domain registrar.

When internet users go to navigate to your website, the domain name system (DNS) uses domain pointing and lookups, eventually translating the domain name into the IP address of the host server…

How to Seek Feedback Like a Leader

How to Seek Feedback Like a Leader

Don’t ask something stupid like, “How am I doing?”, when seeking feedback.

People who give feedback must know two things.

  1. Where you are going (goal).
  2. What you are currently doing to achieve your goal.

People explain what they see when they give feedback. When you ask, “How could I improve?”, you’re seeking advice.

Feedback done well energizes performance. Image of cookies.

How to seek feedback like a leader:

#1. Describe a goal.

Declare what you are trying to achieve. You’re working to develop relationships that energize people, for example.

#2. Narrow focus.

Mention a specific situation, something like leading meetings or having one-on-ones.

#3. Craft smart questions.

Begin questions with ‘what’ or ‘how’.

Avoid questions that begin with verbs like do, don’t, should, or is. “Do you think,” is a dumb way to begin a question. Any question that invites a yes or no response is ineffective when seeking useful input.

3 simple questions to ask when seeking feedback:

  1. What are some things I do to energize people? Or what should I keep doing?
  2. What are some things I do that drain energy from people? Or what should I stop doing?
  3. What could I do to better energize people during conversations? Or what should I begin doing?

#4. Explore positives.

Ask people to tell you what’s working so you can do more of what’s working.

Tip: Prepare people.

Declare an intention and ask them to watch your behavior. You might say, “I’m working to energize people during conversations. Would you watch me while I’m having conversations today? I’ll follow up with you at 3:00 p.m.”

What’s true of the best feedback?

9 Essential Child Psychology Studies

9 Essential Child Psychology Studies post image9 Essential Child Psychology Studies post image

Why are children so depressed? Are modern parenting practices to blame? How has children’s play been ruined?

Children may be more depressed now than ever before.

For example, children were 5 times more likely to meet the criteria for a depressive or anxiety disorder in the year 2007 than they were in 1938.

Is the cause to be found in abuse, whether emotional or physical, or are parents damaging their children through what they believe are the ‘right’ practices?

Perhaps it is changes in technology, such as screen time, or in how children play that has affected them negatively?

Maybe the world is just a grimmer place than it was in 1938.

For artist and photographer Sharon Radisch, visual presentation of their work is essential. The choice to skip text on their homepage in favor of images is what makes this site work. Imagery is front and center.

No white space, no distractions.

When you land on this page, you intuitively know this page is about artistry in some form or another.

What works especially well here is that when you scroll over each image, you’re invited to learn more about each category of the artist’s work. That, too, is minimalist and streamlined, with a pop of yellow replacing the image and a clean, simple font for the one or two word category descriptors. The three line icon at the top of the page keeps with the minimalist approach and is a clever way to give the viewer quick access to the site menu.

This approach is ideal for anyone creating a website to show their photography or visual design work.

4 Rules for Great Relationships at Work

4 Rules for Great Relationships at Work

Enemies don’t help each other.

People give their best to people they know, like, and trust. They give their minimum for jerks. People bring their best when they pull for each other.

What do great work relationships look like?

Focus on respect, not rules, to break barriers to relationships. Image of jet breaking the sound barrier.

4 ways to spot great relationships at work:

#1. Laughter.

Laughter reveals connection. We’re sober with people we don’t like.

#2. Playful jabs.

Weaknesses are badges of honor among friends. You dare say, “You suck at that,” to a friend. It’s not a put down. It’s acceptance.

People who struggle to discuss weaknesses have weak relationships.

You might not be comfortable poking fun at your friends’ weaknesses, but dancing around issues builds shallow connections.

#3. Bragging.

You look for admiration from your friends. You tell them about achievements so they can be happy with you.

Your friends cheer when you buy a vintage VW beetle while they tease you about being a flower child from the 60s.

#4. Respect, not rules.

Rules are for people who don’t trust each other.

Lower obstacles to relationships by focusing on respect, not rules.

Conformity isn’t connection.

Vulnerability strengthens connection.

Boundaries: All successful relationships have boundaries. That’s for a later post.

4 rules for great relationships at work:

#1. Show sincere interest in people.

Ask about their interests. Share their joys and sorrows. Notice their passions.

#2. Avoid arguments when relationships are new.

Find common ground. Build a little trust before you wrestle with the issue of life on other planets.

#3. Let others do most of the talking.

#4. Remember what people talk about.

Bring up topics they brought up yesterday.

It’s not enough to care. You must express it. Unexpressed care is the same as not caring.

Which rules seem most important to you?

What would you add to the above list?

The Vitamin Deficiency Linked To Inflammation And Disease

Low-grade inflammation may be a sign that your body is missing this vitamin.

Inflammation is the immune system’s response to an infection, injury, or disease and is part of the healing process.

However, ongoing low-grade inflammation can contribute to serious disorders such as autoimmune diseases, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Genetic researchers have now found a strong association between vitamin D deficiency and high levels of an inflammatory marker known as C-reactive protein.

This protein is made by the liver and released into the blood: elevated levels are an indication of inflammation in the body and serious health conditions.

The study suggests that chronic inflammation could be reduced by improving vitamin D levels in people with a deficiency.

This means vitamin D status can be a key indicator to identify individuals who are more likely to have chronic inflammation associated with severe illnesses.

Getting enough vitamin D

The research team analysed genetic data from nearly 300,000 patients provided by the UK Biobank.

The genetic evidence revealed a direct link between Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and C-reactive protein levels.

They noticed that with increasing vitamin D levels, the C-reactive protein sharply goes down and levelled off when the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was about 50 nmol/L.

Dr Ang Zhou, the study’s first author, said:

“Inflammation is your body’s way of protecting your tissues if you’ve been injured or have an infection.

High levels of C-reactive protein are generated by the liver in response to inflammation, so when your body is experiencing chronic inflammation, it also shows higher levels of C-reactive protein.

This study examined vitamin D and C-reactive proteins and found a one-way relationship between low levels of vitamin D and high levels of C-reactive protein, expressed as inflammation.

Boosting vitamin D in people with deficiencies may reduce chronic inflammation, helping them avoid a number of related diseases.”

Furthermore, the study suggests that getting enough vitamin D could reduce problems linked to obesity and chronic inflammatory illnesses such as autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Professor Elina Hyppönen, the study’s senior author, said:

“We have repeatedly seen evidence for health benefits for increasing vitamin D concentrations in individuals with very low levels, while for others, there appears to be little to no benefit.

These findings highlight the importance of avoiding clinical vitamin D deficiency, and provide further evidence for the wide-ranging effects of hormonal vitamin D.”

The study was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology (Zhou & Hypponen, 2022).
