Use the History of Leadership to Lead Better Today

George Santayana said, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” Likewise, those who don’t learn from history can’t benefit from its greatest lessons.

Leadership theory has always been an attempt to understand what make a leader effective and distill and share those lessons with others. Leadership theory has evolved and continues to evolve over time.

The earliest leadership theories focused on traits and characteristics of leaders, such as intelligence, physical strength, and charisma. Later theories emphasized the behavior of leaders, including the contrast of task-oriented and people-oriented styles.

During the 20th century, researchers began to focus on the situational context of leadership leading to the development of contingency theories which suggest that different leadership styles are effective in different situations. This approach recognizes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership and that effective leaders must be able to adapt their leadership style to the specific circumstances they face.

One of the most influential leadership theories of the 20th century is Transformational Leadership theory, which emphasizes the importance of leaders inspiring and motivating their followers to achieve a shared vision or goal. This theory argues that effective leaders not only provide direction and guidance, but also act as role models and catalysts that inspire their followers to transcend their own self-interests for the greater good.

Another important leadership theory is Servant Leadership popularized by Robert Greenleaf in the seventies. It was controversial at a time when title, position and status were revered because it suggested that leaders should focus on serving the needs of their followers, rather than pursuing their own self-interests. This theory emphasizes the importance of leaders being humble, ethical, and compassionate, and places a strong emphasis on the leader’s role in developing and empowering their followers.

Which of those theories do you agree with? Disagree with? And why? This is a good conversation to have with your leadership team.

That’s because to lead well it helps to learn from the past what best applies to the present. Theories are best understood as a whole but can also be used as a buffet of ideas and techniques to blend into your leadership approach.

With the various theories about leadership, what can you do today to be an effective leader? Here are twelve ideas that have withstood the test of time:

1. Be adaptable: Recognize that different leadership styles are effective in different situations, and be willing to adapt your approach as needed. Different contexts and situation require different approaches. One size rarely fits all.

2. Be a role model: Lead by example and set high ethical and moral standards for yourself and your organization. People listen to words but believe behaviors. Personal leadership is the foundation for organizational leadership.

3. Be inspiring: Develop a clear and compelling vision for your organization and inspire your followers to work towards that vision. I define inspiration as motivation to the power of purpose. Pay and reward people well, but also help them find the meaning in their work.

4. Be a good listener:…

Deliverr Review – What Makes Deliverr Great and Where Deliverr Falls Short

Deliverr is an ecommerce fulfillment service that integrates with big players in the business to ship products to ecommerce customers. The service works with Shopify, BigCommerce, Walmart, and Amazon, to name a few.

Founded in 2017, the company fills a need that has skyrocketed since the ecommerce boom began in the 2010s. From freight to inventory management to delivery, Deliverr helps make ecommerce manageable for businesses of any size.

Deliverr Compared

Even though Deliverr is worth considering if you need ecommerce fulfillment, it didn’t make my top list. My top choice for ecommerce fulfillment providers is ShipBob, which provides unbeatable freight, warehouse storage, preparation, and order shipping services across the globe. You can use ShipBob’s pricing calculator to estimate costs and follow up with a sales rep for a free quote

Explore the pros and cons of these companies in my list of the top ecommerce fulfillment services.

About Deliverr

With Deliverr, you can offer your customers two-day shipping. You can also use Deliverr to move freight from one location to another. You can rent space in one of the company’s warehouses if you need to store inventory. When you make a sale, Deliverr will prepare your inventory for shipment and send it to your customers.

Deliverr offers two-day delivery from its warehouses, which means most sellers can advertise two-day delivery to their customers. You can enable a Deliverr two-day delivery badge that matches your sales platform—for example, a Shopify two-day delivery badge or a Walmart two-day delivery badge. These badges help build trust and assure customers of quick product fulfillment.

Founded in 2017 by Harish Abbott and Michael Krakaris, Deliverr is a relatively new company. The…

Illusory Correlations In Psychology – PsyBlog

The mind has a tendency to search for illusory correlations everywhere, whether they mean anything or not.

Correlations in statistics are when there appears to be a relationship between two variables.

As one thing changes, so does the other.

For example, as children age their shoe size gets larger, or the more I practice the better I get at tennis.

We say there is a correlation between age and foot size and a correlation between practice and prowess at tennis.

However, there are also many things that just happen to change together, but are not really related.

For example, when you turn the light on and there’s a power-cut, or when you stamp your foot and there’s a simultaneous clap of thunder.

For a single moment, you feel like you’ve got super-powers, but then you notice it is just an illusory correlation.

It demonstrates a common phrase in statistics: “correlation does not imply causation”.

However, our minds have a tendency to search out these types of correlations, not always with the best result.

To see how easily the mind jumps to the wrong conclusions, try virtually taking part in a little experiment.

Example of an illusory correlation

Imagine that you are presented with information about two groups of people about which you know nothing.

Let’s call them the Azaleans and the Begonians.

For each group you are given a list of positive and negative behaviours.

A good one might be: an Azalean was seen helping an old lady across the road.

A bad one might be: a Begonian urinated in the street.

So, you read this list of good and bad behaviours about the Azaleans and Begonians and afterwards you make some judgements about them.

How often do they perform good and bad behaviours and what are they?

What you notice is that it’s the Begonians that seem dodgy.

They are the ones more often to be found shoving burgers into mailboxes and ringing doorbells and running away.

The Azaleans, in contrast, are a sounder bunch; certainly not blameless, but overall better people.

While you’re happy with the judgement, you’re in for a shock.

What’s revealed to you afterwards is that actually the ratio of good to bad behaviours listed for both the Azaleans and Begonians was exactly the same.

For the Azaleans, 18 positive behaviours were listed along with 8 negative.

For the Begonians it was 9 positive and 4 negative.

In reality, you just had less information about the Begonians.

What happened was that you built up illusory correlations between more frequent bad behaviours and the Begonians; they weren’t more frequent, however, they just seemed that way.

When the experiment is over you find out that most other people had done exactly the same thing, concluding that the Begonians were worse people than the Azaleans.

Explaining illusory correlations

This experimental method is actually from a classic study by Hamilton and Gifford (1976), which is all about how we perceive other people’s positive and negative traits.

In the experiment, people had different perceptions of the two groups, good for the majority and bad for the minority, purely because they had more information about the majority.

It’s not hard to see…

The Everyday Foods Linked To Good Mental Health

The foods can offset the impact of major life events, like divorce and unemployment.

Eating more fruits and vegetables is linked to a lower risk of depression, research concludes.

An extra four portions of fruit and vegetables per day can offset the impact of major life events, like divorce and unemployment.

The boost from more fruit and vegetables could counteract half the pain of getting divorced or one-quarter that of being unemployed.

The effect on mental well-being of eating 8 portions per day compared with none is even more dramatic.

These benefits come on top of the well-known protective effect against cancer and heart disease.

The conclusions come from an Australian survey of 7,108 people carried out every year since 2001.

All were asked about their diet and lifestyle.

The results showed that the more fruit and vegetables people ate, the less likely they were to be diagnosed with mental health problems later on.

Dr Redzo Mujcic, the study’s first author, said:

“If people eat around seven or eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day the boost in mental wellbeing is as strong as divorce pushing people the other way, to a depressed state.

We found being made unemployed had a very bad and significant effect on people’s mental health, greatly increasing the risk of depression and anxiety.

But eating seven or eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day can reduce that by half.

And the effect is a lot quicker than the physical improvements you see from a healthy diet.

The mental gains occur within 24 months, whereas physical gains don’t occur until you are in your 60s.”

One possible mechanism by which fruit and vegetables affect happiness is through antioxidants.

There is a suggested connection between antioxidants and optimism.

Dr Mujcic said:

“If people increase their daily intake of fruit and vegetables from zero to eight they are 3.2 percentage points less likely to suffer depression or anxiety in the next two years.

That might not sound much in absolute terms, but the effect is comparable to parts of major life events, like being made unemployed or divorced.

We tested for reverse-causality—ie whether it might be that depression or anxiety leads to people eating less fruit and vegetables—but we found no strong statistical evidence of this.”

The study was published in the journal Social Science & Medicine (Mujcic & Oswald, 2019).

The Road to Magnificent Living

The Road to Magnificent Living

Imagined life persecutes current life when big dreams devalue small practices. Dream it – achieve it, is a malicious lie until you act.

The road to magnificent living is paved with action, not imagination. Thinking ruins life when it leads to more thinking. Dreams matter when they guide action.

You become what you do.

Magnificent living is found in things you do, not things you imagine. Image of two curious kittens.Magnificent living is found in things you do, not things you imagine. Image of two curious kittens.

Ruinous goals:

Goals ruin life when they focus on results and forget daily practices. Few things are more destructive than a goal without action.

Satisfaction goes up based on behaviors, not imagined results. Don’t focus on things you want to do. Pay attention to the things you are doing.

Don’t confuse vision with goals. Vision is always out of reach. You strive to end world hunger, but don’t reach it. Goals define progress. When vision replaces actionable goals, you drag yourself to oblivion.

Magnificent living:

Life stings because you do things that make you miserable. The hardest decisions you make are stopping. How will you stop making yourself miserable? What are you doing today that reflects your imagined life?

Magnificent living is found in things you do, not things you imagine.

Image of glamorous gems.Image of glamorous gems.

Life is miserable because foolish dreams are nightmares that reveal themselves slowly. The life you want isn’t a constant vacation. It isn’t obstacle free. It isn’t leaping from one giggling moment to the next.

What comes to mind when you dream of the life you want? Beaches? First class seats in airplanes? Butlers?

The life you want is found in climbing, not resting. Rest is an enabler, not an end. Energy enables the climb. Rest restores energy.

Judge life not by dreams but actions. Vision for life isn’t about buildings, programs, and another zero on your bank account. Vision is loving people. Magnificent living is loving people today.

What can you do today that reflects magnificent living?
