The Common Foods Linked To Autism

These foods contain an acid that is linked to autism.

An acid commonly used in processed food is linked to the rise in autism, according to research.

Propionic Acid — known as PPA — is used to increase the shelf-life of packaged foods.

The acid helps to inhibit mould growth in cheese and bread — and is also used in other foods, such as juices and dried fruits.

However, when neural stem cells were exposed to the acid, key molecular changes occurred, the researchers found.

When eaten by a pregnant woman, these changes may inhibit the development of neurons in the unborn child.

The acid has also been found in the stools of children with autism.

Autistic children frequently suffer from gastrointestinal problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Dr Saleh Naser, study co-author, said:

“Studies have shown a higher level of PPA in stool samples from children with autism and the gut microbiome in autistic children is different.

I wanted to know what the underlying cause was.”

For the study, neural stem cells were exposed to PPA, the acid used in food processing.

The results showed that the acid reduces the number of neurons produced.

The acid also increased the production of glial cells.

An excess of glial cells is linked to inflammation, which has also been found in autistic children.

The damage the acid causes could hamper neurons communicating with each other.

This could lead to the characteristic signs of autism, such as repetitive behaviours and problems interacting with other people.

Pregnant mothers who eat processed foods, therefore, may be increasing levels of PPA in their gut and passing on these to the unborn child.

This research is still at an early stage, and the next step is to test the acid on mice.

The authors write:

“This research is only the first step towards better understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

But we have confidence we are on the right track to finally uncovering autism etiology.”

The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports (Abdelli et al., 2019).

Presence: 12 Signs You Aren’t Here

Presence: 12 Signs You Aren’t Here

Crazy people are all there and never here.

“The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.” Abraham Maslow

Presence is paying attention to what’s in front of you. You are a gift to others, but you devalue others and yourself when you’re somewhere else.

You’re a by-stander in your own life when you live in the past or the future.

Presence is paying attention to what's in front of you. Image of a couple hugging and looking at their phones.Presence is paying attention to what's in front of you. Image of a couple hugging and looking at their phones.

Presence: 12 signs you aren’t here:

It felt good when I answered, “Present,” during rollcall in elementary school. I’m here. But how do you know when you’re absent?

  1. Guilt, resentment, and regret point to living in the past.
  2. Worry, anxiety, and stress are symptoms of living in the present.
  3. Multitasking.
  4. Fixing people while they are talking.
  5. Judging. You can dislike something without judging it. Tomatoes aren’t bad even if you don’t like them on peanut butter sandwiches.
  6. Mind wandering.
  7. Racing thoughts at night.
  8. Needing to be liked. You can’t be present and need approval at the same time.
  9. The hoped-for life condemns this life. Don’t let aspiration insult perspiration. You never arrive. Keep working anyway.
  10. Gulping food.
  11. Everything is drudgery. Fun left the building.
  12. Avoiding. Anytime you avoid someone they control you.

The world that isn’t here:

A wandering mind lands in places that don’t exist. What might be doesn’t exist. What happened isn’t here. When you hang out in the world that isn’t here garbage clings to you, worry or regret for example.

Life stinks when you’re not in it.

“Remember then: there is only one time that is important—now! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power.” Leo Tolstoy

3 Ways to Find Enjoyment Today

3 Ways to Find Enjoyment Today

A coaching client said, “I want a learning plan for myself that’s fun. I don’t need another job.” All learning plans should be fun. The world is wacked when enjoyment feels like a newborn goat learning to walk. Normal people resist discomfort.

Resistance makes learning unlikely.

Enjoyment turns battle to play.

Enjoyment turns battle to play. Image of a baby standing in a milk crate.Enjoyment turns battle to play. Image of a baby standing in a milk crate.

The problem of grit:

Success depends on endurance. Average people succeed as long as they keep going when the path is steep. Can you find weird enjoyment in grit? If you don’t, you’re doomed.

Grit requires energy. Enjoyment is energy.

“I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast! And when I run, I feel His pleasure.” 1924 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 400m and missionary to China, Eric Liddell.

3 ways to find enjoyment:

#1. Enjoyment and purpose:

You can’t persist long when two things are true. The activity is painful and optional. Starving people dig for potatoes even if they hate potatoes.

Purpose is discovered in usefulness.

Purpose is found in connection with something outside yourself. How might you best serve? What pressing need do you most frequently notice? How might you meet that pressing need?

Self-serving purpose creates fear. Other-serving purpose fuels energy.

#2. Enjoyment and difficulty:

Training without a goal is like eating fire ants.

Doing hard things isn’t painful when they serve a goal. Training for the Olympics is hard, but a goal makes training satisfy.

#3. Enjoyment and responsibility:

“A man who becomes conscious of the responsibility he bears … to an unfinished work will never be able to throw away his life. He knows the why for his existence and will be able to bear almost any how.” Victor Frankl

The defiant joy of leadership is an unfinished work. (Not an unfinished to-do list.)

How can you let yourself enjoy today?

When someone likes their experience with your brand, trust begins to build. Once that happens, it’s time to ask for a small commitment— gathering contact information and permission to connect.

There’s just one problem. Today, people are careful about giving out their email address. You have to offer something valuable that makes it worth their while.

The question we ask ourselves at the Subscribe stage is, “What valuable chunk of content can we offer in exchange for a prospect’s contact information and permission to follow up with them?”

Some things you might leverage to build your email list are

  1. A Downloadable Report or a White Paper.
  2. A Tool Template Checklist
  3. A Downloadable PDF (one of our best converting lead magnets of all time is our Facebook Ad Swipe File, its just a list of all of the different Facebook ads we have run in the past.)
  4. Quiz Surveys (like our “What Type of Marketer Are You?” quiz.)
  5. Webinars and Consulting Sessions
  6. Discount and Coupon Codes (for e-Commerce)

If you look around you’ll see these all over the place. Mortgage companies use Mortgage Calculators, Scalable (our sister company) uses our “Seven Levels to Scale” which is our primary lead magnet.

All of these can be used as a value to get somebody to give you their contact information. So what do you use? What is your lead?

How could Hazel & Hems or Cyrus & Clark apply the subscription stage to their business?

For Hazel & Hems Boutique, a great way to get customers to subscribe is to offer exclusive discounts, products, and promotions that require subscription. Another method may be to host a weekly giveaway of a small item that requires subscription to be on the list.

For Cyrus & Clark Media, subscription to an exclusive email list that contains “secret” marketing methods for the Construction industry, combined with a piece of gated content such as a downloable asset called “10 Mistakes That Prevent Your Construction Company Growth” could be effective tools for the Subscription Stage.

Efficiency: One Simple Plan to Lose Less Money

Efficiency: One Simple Plan to Lose Less Money

Organizations would be rich if they stopped losing money.

20% of every dollar earned by a company in the US is lost to employee time theft. Losses from theft, fraud, and other retail “shrink” in 2019 totaled $61.7 billion.* That’s up 11.1 billion from the more honest year before.

The goal of losing less money begins with small desks. People behind big desks are comically blind to efficiency. They lose money while trying to cut costs.

Efficiency is inversely proportional to the size of a leader’s desk. The smaller the desk the more efficient the leader.

How to be efficient: Arrogance is less efficient than humility. Image of a shy goose. How to be efficient: Arrogance is less efficient than humility. Image of a shy goose.

3 commandments to improve efficiency:

Open space on a desk is a lagoon of procrastination. Papers and folders pile up; follow-through goes down. A person with a small desk can’t put stuff off.

Commandment #1: Thou shalt give small desks to promoted leaders.

Distance weakens relationships. The greater the expanse between the person behind the desk and the person in front of the desk the thinner the relationship.

Thin relationships cost more money than tight.

Commandment #2: Thou shalt strengthen relationships when expectations go up.

Everything you do to protect ego infringes on efficiency. Image of a suit of armor.Everything you do to protect ego infringes on efficiency. Image of a suit of armor.

Big desks encourage the illusion of importance. The more important you feel the less able you are to see reality.

Arrogance is less efficient than humility.

Butt kissing costs millions in lost productivity. Big desks inspire fraudulent compliments, dancing around the pole of veracity, and head nodding.

Leaders need to cultivate humility, not inflate their egos. Everything you do to protect ego infringes on efficiency.

Command #3: Thou shalt treat others as more important than yourself.

My simple plan to increase efficiency begins with eliminating big desks. Thankfully, in a mobile world desks and offices are less important. Don’t get me started on staging your video calls.

What symptoms of arrogance do you see in organizations?

What advantages do you see in humble leadership?
