A 5-Step Response to Employee Concerns About Work-Life Balance

A 5-Step Response to Employee Concerns About Work-Life Balance

Experienced leaders are coming to grips with a younger workforce that wants more out of life than working long stressful hours.

Stressed employees want to minimize pressure. Leaders feel pressure to do more with less. Only 2 out of 10 employees are willing to go above and beyond their job expectations.*

72% say work-life balance is a consideration when looking for a job.**

A five-step response to employee concerns about work-life balance:

#1. Take them seriously.

When someone says they want work-life balance, don’t assume it’s a bad thing. Set aside your assumptions and explore expectations.

Burned-out employees deliver poor results.

#2. Avoid rushing to solve a concern you don’t understand.

Explore purpose:

  1. What makes work-life balance important to you?
  2. What benefits would come your way if you had work-life balance?
  3. What would day-to-day life look like if you had work-life balance?

#3. Define the win:

If you had work-life balance, what would life look like? Get specific.

What would be different on a day-to-day basis if you had work-life balance?

#4. Create a time journal.

Now that you have clarity about purpose and expectations, track their use of time for a week. Create a spreadsheet with ½ hour blocks that covers 24 hours a day for 7 days. Include home time because work-life balance is about work and home.

“It’s easy to log your time. Stop every 3 or 4 hours and complete your time journal.”

#5. Reconvene in a week:

Explore the results of their time journal. Ask them,

  1. What did you learn?
  2. After tracking your time, how do you define work-life balance?
  3. What needs to change?
  4. How can I help?

Assumption: This post assumes you want what’s best for employees and customers.

How might leaders respond to concerns about work-life balance?

The Top 4 Mistakes Busy Leaders Make

The Top 4 Mistakes Busy Leaders Make

Time pressure lends itself to mistakes, Image of clocks. Time pressure lends itself to mistakes, Image of clocks.

Mistake #1: Being penny wise and pound foolish.

Everything isn’t a crisis, even if you think it is. It’s destructive to allow urgencies to replace priorities.

Busyness is no excuse to take your eye off what’s important.

Some leaders NEED busyness to feel important but being busy isn’t necessarily productive. There’s always too much to do.

Busyness invites short-sightedness.

  1. Neglecting self-care like exercise, healthy diet, and sleep. Leave work when you still have energy.
  2. Minimizing self-development and postponing training.
  3. Cutting corners and taking shortcuts
  4. Justifying pushiness.
  5. Disregarding relationship building.

Time pressure lends itself to mistakes. The faster you go, the more mistakes you make.

Caveat: If the house is burning down, don’t worry about getting to bed on time. Put the fire out.

Tip: Establish non-negotiables that reflect what’s truly important.

Mistake #2: Beating yourself up when you screw up.

The toughest battles you face express the war within.

Beating yourself up doesn’t lift you up.

Beating yourself up isn’t moral superiority.

Tips:

Encourage yourself the same way you encourage your friends when they screw up.

  1. You experience emotions. You aren’t your emotions.
  2. You make mistakes. You aren’t your mistakes.
  3. You succeed. You aren’t your success.

Mistake #3: Doing it yourself.

The ‘best’ excuse for over-work is doing the work yourself.

The favorite saying of do-it-yourself leaders is, “It’s faster if I do it myself.”

Tips:

  1. Only do what only you can do.
  2. Learn to delegate. You expand your impact when you trust competent others to get things done.

#4. Giving voice to everything in your head.

Time pressure is an invitation to say something stupid.

Self-expression is not justification for…

  1. Backward-facing whining.
  2. Self-justifying defensiveness.
  3. Destructive criticism.
  4. Catastrophizing.
  5. Problem amplification.

Tip: open your mouth to make things better.

2 Surprising Personality Traits Linked To Stronger Immune System

Although people high in this personality trait generally suffer from more stress and anxiety, some have a surprising health advantage.

Being neurotic can be good for your health in some circumstances.

So-called ‘healthy neurotics’ are people who combine neurotic personality traits with being conscientious.

Healthy neurotics have lower levels of markers of inflammation in their blood, suggesting their immune system is functioning better.

The self-discipline of being conscientious counteracts unhealthy neurotic behaviours like overeating and drinking too much alcohol.

Dr Nicholas A. Turiano, the study’s first author, said:

“These people are likely to weigh the consequences of their actions, and therefore their level of neuroticism coupled with conscientiousness probably stops them from engaging in risky behaviors.”

A survey of 1,054 adults found that those who were both neurotic and conscientious had lower levels of inflammation in their blood.

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is an immune protein that is linked to chronic disease.

The neurotic and conscientious also had fewer chronic health problems and lower body-mass indexes.

The results are somewhat surprising as neurotic people tend to suffer more from stress and anxiety, which are also linked to worse health.

Dr Turiano said:

“Speculation is that healthy neurotics may be hyper-vigilant about their lifestyle and about seeking treatment when a problem arises.

It’s their conscientiousness that guides their decisions to prevent disease or quickly get treatment when they don’t feel well.”

Better physical health is not the first advantage identified for the neurotic, as I’ve written previously:

“High levels of creativity may go hand-in-hand with neuroticism.

It’s because the area of the brain which is linked to creativity also has the tendency to overthink things and worry.

Neuroticism is characterised by negative thinking in a range of areas.”

Neurotic people also seem to suffer from indecision as a result of worrying about the future.

One way to reduce this is to start learning to take action:

“Learning to value taking action is an important way of reducing the harmful effects of neuroticism.

People high in anxiety and neuroticism dislike taking action, recent research reveals.”

→ Read on about the harmful effects of neuroticism.

The study was published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity (Turiano et al., 2012).

This Popular Vitamin Is Linked To Weight Loss

High levels of this vitamin are associated with 20 pounds more weight loss.

Higher levels of vitamin D are linked to more weight loss, research finds.

People who are dieting have been shown to lose 20 pounds more when they have high vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D at higher levels in the body is also associated with burning belly fat.

The conclusions come from a study of 4,421 people whose total body fat and belly fat was measured.

Across men and women, higher vitamin D levels were linked to less belly fat, the results showed.

However, women with higher vitamin D levels also had less total body fat.

One reason for the beneficial effect of vitamin D may be its connection with the neurotransmitter serotonin.

Serotonin can affect everything from sleep to mood.

High levels of vitamin D may suppress the storage of fat.

Over half the people in the world may be deficient in vitamin D.

Foods that are rich in vitamin D include oily fish and eggs, but most people get their vitamin D from the action of sunlight on the skin.

That is why levels are typically lower in the body through the winter months in more Northern climes.

Dr Rachida Rafiq, the study’s first author, said:

“Although we did not measure vitamin D deficiency in our study, the strong relationship between increasing amounts of abdominal fat and lower levels of vitamin D suggests that individuals with larger waistlines are at a greater risk of developing deficiency, and should consider having their vitamin D levels checked.”

The study does not prove causation, though, Dr Rafiq explained:

“Due to the observational nature of this study, we cannot draw a conclusion on the direction or cause of the association between obesity and vitamin D levels.

However, this strong association may point to a possible role for vitamin D in abdominal fat storage and function.”

The study was published in the journal Clinical Nutrition (Rafiq et al., 2018).
